  • 10 Tips for Mastering Social Media as a Nail Artist

Over the past few years, social media has become a major platform and source of inspiration for the nail industry - both for consumers and professionals. We've come to the point where we, as nail artists, can use platforms like Tumblr, Instagram and Pinterest to promote our services and creativity to current and potential customers, as well as connect with like-minded brands and other nail techs. We spoke with UK-based nail tech Sophie Harris-Greenslade a.k.a. @theillustratednail, who gave us her top tips for mastering social media as a nail artist.

    1. 10 Tips for Mastering Social Media as a Nail Artist

      1. When taking pictures, choose the best light that really shows off your work to its full potential. Natural sunlight is great but not always possible. You want light that is brightening but not harsh. An umbrella reflector diffuses the light and reduces shadows - perfect for taking nail pictures! They are worth investing in!

      2. Play around with your images - crop the image and play with filters on Instagram - sometimes a nail picture can look so much better zoomed in on just a few fingers or turned upside down!

      3. Think about the background - play around with different colors, different environments - but remember the focus is on the nails - you don't want the background to take over! How about using accessories or props. Get your model to hold the lacquer bottle and @ the brand - show them your work and that you're using their products, who knows they might re-gram it meaning you'll get more followers and maybe potential clients!

      4. Think about your style and how you want your Instagram page to look. Be original with the content you are putting up!

      5. The hand pose is also very important. It's so boring posting picture after picture of the "claw" or hand on top of the other hand pose. It looks forced and is pretty boring! Think outside of the box - capture hands in more natural poses.

      6. A great trick which hand models use on shoots is to make sure you or your model lifts their hand up before the photo is taken. It reduces redness and protruding veins in the hand.

      7. Be selective of the work you put up - it's about quality, not quantity. Remember you don't have to put every design you create up - choose your best design and best image.

      8. You want to be posting regularly so that you have a presence on social media and keep your followers interested but don't overdo it!

      9. Follow other nail artists, nail brands and fashion magazines. Hashtag and @ brands to show them you are using their products.

    4. 10 Tips for Mastering Social Media as a Nail Artist

      10. Be part of the nail community - contact other nail artists and do a collaborative project together! Get other nail artists involved in an event and blog/Instagram/twitter about it - the more you do the more people you'll meet, the more contacts and jobs you'll get and the more fun you'll have! You'll also gain more followers and potential clients! Networking is key!
