#OPIintheHouse: Bold Colors Brought this Piece from Drab to Fab

Looking for new ways to experiment with your favorite OPI colors? Check out how our guest blogger, Ace Design Expert Katie Reynolds, used the OPI Palette by Clark+Kensington to transform her antique dresser using her favorite OPI shades!

I’ll admit it: over the years, I have become a bona fide neutral lover. My home, awash in gray and white, looks like an homage to calmness and civility. Perhaps it’s due to my love of the coast and its gloriously whitewashed beach cottages - who knows! On one hand, I love a good neutral interior, but when it comes to fashion it’s anything but. I have always been a fan of a bold manicure and a large scale floral print – so when I had the opportunity to try out one of OPI’s signature shades reinvented in paint form from the OPI Palette by Clark+Kensington, I knew it was time to take the leap back into the world of color.

I had long been searching for the right color to update an antique nightstand in my mint hued guestroom – that’s when I discovered OPI’s Do You Lilac It? NLB29, a shade that is straight from the 2016 Clark+Kensington Summer Color Trends in a palette aptly named Ice Cream Shoppe. Oh… my… goodness… the transformation was nothing short of delightful! I am downright giddy with the results.

This color is fun, vibrant, and looks AMAZING with the gold hardware and crisp white bedding. Completely inspired, I went one step further and painted the interior in a pink shade called Mimosas for Mr. & Mrs. NLR41. The color is simply divine and takes this piece to the next level of glam! What do you think of the transformation?

I hope you have been inspired to try out this gorgeous collection of colors in your own home!  Before diving into a project this weekend, here are a few ways I suggest getting started:

  1. Think small! Sometimes all you need is a little accent piece, like my nightstand or a cabinet, to give the room a huge wow factor. Imagine a vintage chandelier painted in a bold shade like Cajun Shrimp NLL64 (I think that might be my next project!). If you are tiptoeing into bold color or new to painting, starting small is the perfect way to begin.
  2. Go for bold, with a wow-factor finish. I went with a high gloss when using Do You Lilac It? NLB29, and paired the high gloss with an eggshell finish on called Mimosas for Mr. & Mrs. NLR41. Understanding finish is important when purchasing paint, since it depicts how glossy your final result will be. I absolutely love the way the high gloss looks glam and reflects the morning light in the space!
  3. Experiment with paint on various surfaces around your home - I live for a boldly hued door. Go for it with a door in your home or around the trim of a room to create a really fun and unexpected pop of color.
  4. Pair bold colors with neutrals. As much as I love neutrals in clothes, spaces and accessories, there is nothing more chic than a bold color against a whisper of gray or a crisp white backdrop.  Keep proportions in check and don’t forget to balance out bold color.

Happy painting!
