Earth Day: 5 Ways To Make A Positive Impact

April 22 marks "Earth Day" - a global initiative to celebrate and support environmental and climate protection. It's important that everyone does their part to reduce their environmental footprint where we can, so we've put together a list of 5 easy ways (thinking Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) that you can use to make a positive impact today, and everyday!

    1. Reuse Your Water Bottle

We've known that water bottles are bad for the environment now for what seems like forever. There are so many amazing, trendy reusable water bottle brands that make it so easy, and stylish, to decrease the amount of plastic we use and better the environment.

But conservation doesn’t have to stop there! Try opting to have a paper-free day, or even reuse paper that might not have been used on both sides. You can also look at swapping standard light bulbs around the house with energy-saving ones, or having an “unplugged” evening, by opting for activities with no screens towards the end of the day.

    2. Be Water Conscious

A simple change like switching your laundry from hot to cold within your daily routine can help save major amounts of energy. Another idea is to lower the temperature on your water heater, we love hot showers, but a small change like this one can make a big impact! Lastly, several gallons of water is wasted by having water on when it isn’t actually being used. Try turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth, or even while washing your hair.

    3. Enjoy the Outdoors

Getting fresh air and sunshine for a few minutes each day has so many positive benefits. Try going for a 20-minute walk outdoors, and be sure to bring a pair of gloves if you’d like to spend a few moments collecting any trash or debris you may see along the way. Small acts of kindness like this allow you to leave beautiful places a little bit better than how you found them, every bit counts!

While outside, take a few moments to take in your surroundings. We love the idea of journaling to capture a few things you found beautiful while on your walk. Do you have the capacity to impact your surroundings further? Beautify outdoor spaces by mowing lawns, pulling weeds, or even planting small trees or gardens if you are able.

    4. Up-cycle

Up-cycling is a way to reuse items that you might normally throw away. We love the idea of creating small vases out of empty jars and bottles, or taking an older piece of clothing and transforming it into something fresh and new! The ultimate up-cycle though is composting, starting a compost bin with food scraps and other organic materials then allows you to utilize your compost to fertilize plants and gardens.

Another great way to give back is by donating time to environmental groups. Many conservation groups rely solely on donations, especially donations of time through volunteering. Giving back to your community is a great way to share experiences with others while helping out a good cause you believe in.

    5. Recycle

As the third and final step after reducing, and reusing where possible, last comes recycling. The best way to recycle items like nail polish bottles (which technically classify as a solvent), is to let any remaining nail polish in your empty bottle dry out, and then it can be combined with other commingled recycling items according to your local city’s practices.
