OPI Pro Spotlight: @lpwnailpro
Meet Lisa Peña Wong, @lpwnailpro, a visionary nail artist blending color, passion, and cultural pride into every unforgettable look.
With 30+ years in the nail game, Lisa (AKA @lpwnailpro) is a true artist—turning nails into mini masterpieces full of vibrancy, movement, and heart. From red carpets to fashion editorials and movie sets, her work has graced the hands of A-listers like Margot Robbie and Taylor Swift. This Hispanic Heritage Month, she shares how her culture, creativity, and decades of experience have shaped her journey.
OPI: Where do you find inspiration for your stunning nail art designs?
Lisa: I’m inspired by abstract designs, fluid art, and the vibrant, organic patterns found in nature—like the swirling colors of tie-dye and the textures of rocks and geodes. I love how flowing color blends, watercolor effects, and bold, unpredictable designs can come together to create something truly unique. This passion fuels my love for nail art, where I can turn tiny canvases into expressive works of art that reflect movement, emotion, and the beauty of natural chaos.
OPI: You've worked on so many high-profile projects – from magazine covers and red carpets to movies and campaigns with A-list celebrities. What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?
Lisa: One of the most memorable moments in my career was working on my first movie, Amsterdam. The experience was unforgettable—not just because of the project itself, but because of the incredible cast I got to work alongside, including Margot Robbie, Rami Malek, and even Taylor Swift, whom I had the chance to meet there. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with so many inspiring talents such as Sally Field, Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb, and Quinta Brunson, to name just a few. Each experience has been a privilege and a powerful reminder of why I love what I do.
OPI: What's your process like when creating nail looks for big photoshoots, movie sets, or celebrity clients?
Lisa: When it comes to photo shoots, there’s often more room for artistic freedom—it really depends on the product or the model’s vibe. On movie or TV sets, however, everything is driven by the character and her personality, so the look has to align with the story. For celebrity red carpet events, the direction usually comes from the outfit itself; the goal is to create a look that complements what they’re wearing and enhances their overall presence. Each setting requires a different approach, but it’s all about creating a cohesive and impactful visual.
OPI: How did you get your start in the nail world?
Lisa: My journey started early—I enrolled in cosmetology school while still in high school in the late 80’s and graduated just a week after earning my diploma. I began by doing hair and eventually picked up nails, working in a salon for several years.
Over time, I realized my true passion was nails, not hair. That led me to start competing in nail competitions, where I proudly placed first in my category.
Lisa: From there, a product company recruited me, and I stepped into the world of education—traveling across the country, teaching others about nails. A new chapter began when I moved back to California and was invited to work on set for a fabulous little show called Ugly Betty. That experience completely hooked me—and it’s brought me to where I am today, doing what I love in the world of nail artistry onset.
OPI: As an educator and a top-tier artist, what do you look for in professional nail products?
Lisa: Quality products are an absolute must—there’s nothing more frustrating than having to redo work because of poor-performing products. I always look for formulas that are highly pigmented, offer long-lasting wear, and can be removed easily without damaging the natural nails. OPI’s new Infinite Shine Gel has really delivered on all of that, and I absolutely love working with it! It’s reliable, beautiful, and helps me create looks that last while still caring for the client’s nails.
OPI: What are some Fall nail trends you're most excited to see this season?
Lisa: Fall is right around the corner, and I’m excited to dive into the rich, deep colors that the season brings. It’s always fun working with those moody, dramatic shades—especially warm browns, deep French manis, and cozy autumn tones. I’m also looking forward to playing with textures like velvet nails and fun details like polka dots. These are just a few of the trends and styles that come to mind, and I can’t wait to see how they come to life this season.
OPI: Do you have a favorite nail design, shape, or length?
Lisa: My favorite nail shape has definitely become medium to long almond nails—they’re just so pretty, feminine, and elegant. It’s funny because for most of my life, I was all about that super sharp square shape. But over time, I’ve fallen in love with the softness and versatility of the almond. It elongates the fingers beautifully and works with so many styles, from minimalist to bold and artistic.
OPI: How does your Hispanic heritage influence and inspire your artistry?
Lisa: I think being Hispanic definitely comes through in my love for fun, bright colors on nails—it’s part of the vibrant culture I grew up with. Unfortunately, those bold shades aren’t always appropriate for every setting, but I still find ways to incorporate that energy and flair when I can.
For me, one of the best ways to celebrate my Hispanic heritage is through great food and gathering with family. It’s about sharing traditions, flavors, and stories that keep our culture alive and full of joy.
