OPI Pro Spotlight: @joselovesnicki

Clients can look forward to vibrant designs and hand-drawn nail art when getting a mani from @joselovesnicki.

Hailing from Miami, our June Pro Spotlight pick is a creative force who began his nail journey by painting nails for fun. Read on to learn more about his career and work, including his favorite shade from our Summer Make the Rules collection.

OPI: We love your use of vibrant colors and designs in your nail art! Where does your inspiration for these looks come from?

Jose: My inspiration comes from the vibrant colors of Miami (where I grew up). My city has so much to offer and so many artsy and colorful sights to explore.

OPI: What is your favorite look to do for a client, when they come in not knowing what kind of mani to get?

Jose: I love to offer hand-drawn art! Whether it be florals, swirls, or attempting a fun character, it keeps me creative and keeps the client happy.

OPI: Your nail art and creativity continue to grow and get better every day! How do you push yourself to work on technique and design?

Jose: Over time, I learned that through practice and patience, most things can be achieved. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get where I am in my nail journey and I always strive to learn something new. My clients are my biggest supporters and continuously motivate me to carry on.

OPI: Where would you love to see yourself in the nail industry in the next few years?

Jose: I would love to expand my career into something larger scale, such as working alongside a nail polish company, creating my own polish line, or even becoming an educator.

OPI: Which shade from our new Summer 23' collection are you most excited to use on your clients?

Jose: I’m Yacht Leaving! I love a bright teal, it reminds me of my childhood bedroom.

OPI: Both personally and professionally, how has the nail community and industry been a positive impact on your life?

Jose: Personally, it has been a great way to express myself through color and art. I started painting my nails for fun and eventually fell in love with the artistry of it. This led to the journey of becoming a nail tech. Professionally, it has opened up a new world for me. I have met so many amazing people (techs and clients included) who have helped shape the nail tech and friend I am today.

OPI: Do you feel a sense of equality and the ability to promote self-expression as a male in the nail industry?

Jose: At first I was a bit hesitant to dive into the nail world, as it is typically female-dominated, but regardless I have felt very welcomed and comfortable. It makes me proud to be included and to be a role model for others who are considering a similar path.

OPI: If you could go back in time, and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Jose: I would tell myself that it’s going to be okay, and to not let my negative thoughts overpower my potential. Anxiety has sometimes been a roadblock in multiple parts of my life, both personally and in my career. It never feels good to complete an appointment with a client feeling like I could have done better, but it’s only a reminder that we all have off days and that we are human.

OPI: How have you used nails as a form of self-expression, and how do you use nails to show your pride?

Jose: I strive to theme my manicures around important moments in my life, whether it be a concert or a holiday. I love to explore different techniques and show off a bold design. My nails are an essential part of my expression and my identity.
