You've heard of gel nails. You've probably worn them. But between gel polish, nail builder gel, and everything the internet claims about damage and removal, the actual information can be hard to find. Consider this your definitive read.
What is a gel manicure?
The short version: gel polish is polish that cures under an LED lamp instead of air-drying. That one difference is what gives it shine, longevity, and chip resistance. At OPI, there are three gel systems—each built for a different outcome and/or user.
GELement At-home Gel Polish

Available in clear or six neutral shades. Applied professionally.
How do I apply gel nail polish?
Depends on the system. GELement is designed for home use, and our tutorial walks you through everything. GelColor and GELevate are salon formulas—your nail tech has it handled, but the education is there if you want to understand what's happening.
How do I remove gel nail polish?
Properly removed gel polish doesn't damage your nails. That reputation comes from people who skip the soak and go straight to peeling or overuse e-files — which, genuinely, is the only thing that causes damage here. All three OPI gel systems soak off cleanly. Follow the guide for your specific formula.
How long does a gel manicure last?
GELement: 2+ weeks of glossy wear
GelColor: 3 weeks of durable wear

Is gel polish safe?
Yes. All OPI gel formulas are fully vegan—no animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
What is nail builder gel?
Nail builder gel is an enhancement product used to add structure, strength, and length to natural nails. Applied by a professional, it's durable without the weight or the process.
What’s the difference between builder gel and gel?
Gel polish delivers color and shine that lasts. Builder gel—like GELevate—delivers structure. One is applied on top of your nail, the other builds the nail itself. They're often used together, like your favorite GelColor shade on top of clear GELevate, but they're not interchangeable.
